Use a Hairdryer or Heat Gun
When it comes to removing LED lights that have been installed with adhesive tape, using a hairdryer or heat gun can be an effective method to soften the tape and make it easier to remove.
- Start by unplugging the LED lights from the power source to avoid any electrical hazards.
- Hold the hairdryer or heat gun about 3-4 inches away from the adhesive tape on the LED light.
- Move the hairdryer or heat gun back and forth across the tape for a few minutes until the tape feels warm to the touch. Be careful not to overheat the LED light itself, as this could damage the light strip and make it unusable in the future.
- Once the tape is warm enough, use a plastic scraper or your fingers to gently peel it, starting from one corner of the LED light and working along. If the tape isn’t coming off without much force, heat it up again with the hairdryer or heat gun for a bit longer and try again.
- If there are any remaining pieces of adhesive tape left on the wall or the LED light, you can use rubbing alcohol or an adhesive remover to clean it off.
Use a Putty Knife
Another option for removing those tricky LED strip lights from the wall is to use a putty knife – the tool you’ve probably got lying around, but if you’re like me have never used!
While it’s normally used for working putty around glass windows, it also comes in incredibly handy when trying to pry something off of a wall due to its flat, thin yet wide shape.
To do this, simply insert the putty knife between the LED light and the wall and gently pry it off. Be careful not to damage the wall surface, as doing this too quickly or with too much force can cause chunks of the paint on the wall to come off too.
Use a Solvent
If the LED lights have been installed with a very strong adhesive, you may need to use a solvent to dissolve it.
Acetone or rubbing alcohol can be particularly effective for this.
To remove the LED strip light, apply the solvent to the adhesive using a cloth or cotton swab and wait for a few minutes. Then, use a plastic scraper or your fingers to gently remove the LED light – slowly.
