Type of Lighting

The height at which you hang pendant lights above your kitchen counter largely depends on their intended purpose and function. Aka – what are you using them for?

Is it just to generally light up the kitchen? Or is it to specifically provide light to the countertop below so that you can see what you’re doing?

Consider these different scenarios:

Task Lighting

If your primary goal is to use the pendant lights for task lighting, (i.e. food preparation or reading recipes), you’ll want to hang them lower, typically around 30 to 36 inches above the counter.

At this height, you’re ensuring the light is focused directly on the workspace, reducing shadows and enhancing visibility.

Ambient Lighting

For ambient lighting used to create a general cozy atmosphere, you should hang your pendant lights higher, usually about 40 inches above the counter.

Hanging them this little bit higher allows the light to spread more evenly throughout your kitchen, providing a softer, more subtle glow.

Style of Your Pendant Light

The style and design of your pendant lights will for sure influence how high you’ll want them to sit above your countertop.

It’s no secret that pendant lights come in all different shapes and sizes, from small, minimalist designs to larger, statement pieces. Here’s how the style can impact the height:

  • Large pendant lights: If your pendant lights are large and/or have intricate designs, hanging them slightly higher can create a sense of grandeur and prevent them from overwhelming your space.
  • Small pendant lights: Smaller, simpler pendant lights should be hung lower, as they won’t obstruct your view and constantly be in your way. Also, smaller pendant lights can provide focused task lighting without being visually distracting.

Regardless of the size of your pendant lights, you may want to consider centering them to your countertop – read more on that here.

Ceiling Height

Last but certainly not least, the height of your kitchen’s ceiling also plays a role in determining the ideal pendant light height.

Assuming you have a standard 8-foot ceiling, your pendant lights should typically hang 30 to 36 inches above the counter.

If you have a higher ceiling, you’ll want to adjust the pendant height accordingly to maintain a proportional look.

As a general rule, for each additional foot of ceiling height, add about 3 inches to the recommended pendant height.

So, you’d be looking at 33-39 inches for a 9-foot ceiling, 36-42 inches for a 10-foot ceiling etc…

General Tips

  • Don’t be afraid to experiment with the height of your pendant lights. Use the above information as a guide, but play around and adjust them to find the height that best works for you!
  • You can use temporary hooks or adjustable pendant light fixtures during installation to fine-tune the height before making a permanent commitment. Don’t feel like once you’ve chosen a height and installed your pendant light it’s final.
  • If you are installing multiple pendant lights over a longer kitchen island or counter, make sure they are evenly spaced and not too cramped up above the centre of the counter.
