What are Puck Lights?

We’ve written a whole article about what puck lights are and their benefits here, but in short – puck lights are small, circular light fixtures that are designed to be mounted underneath kitchen cabinets, shelves, or other surfaces.

But for our purposes, they are going to be ideal for placing inside our wall sconces, and then attaching those sconces to the wall.

How to Install Wall Sconces Without Wiring (Step by Step)

Step 1: Remove the existing wiring from the wall sconce

The first step in this process is to remove any existing wiring from the light fixture.

This can typically be done by unscrewing the screws attaching the back plate to the light, removing the plate and then removing the wires.

Step 2: Place the puck light(s) inside

Next, place your puck lights inside the wall sconce. Make sure your puck light has fully-powered batteries inside (usually 3x AAA batteries), and then simply place the puck light inside the sconce and turn it on.

Step 3: Install the light fixture on the wall

Finally, install the light on the wall. Since there is no wiring to worry about, this will simply be a case of attaching the bracket to the wall, and then attaching the light fixture to the bracket.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to install a wall sconce?

The cost to install a wall sconce will vary depending on a number of factors, such as the type of sconce, the number of them you’re looking to install, and arguably most importantly the cost of an electrician in your local area.

As a rough estimate though, the cost to install a normal, non-complex wall sconce will range anywhere from $50 to $300. As always though, it is best to get a quote from a professional electrician to get an accurate estimate.

How high should wall sconces be?

As a general rule of thumb, wall sconces are best placed at eye level, which is roughly 66 inches or so off the floor. This is a good starting point, but you may need to adjust the height depending on the specific design of the sconce and the room.

For example, if you have quite a high ceiling, you may want to hang the sconce higher up the wall to keep it in proportion to the room – keeping wall lights at eye level when you have very high ceilings can make them look out of place. NOTE: If you do have a high ceiling, you may want to read our guide on how to change a light bulb in a high ceiling.

Equally, if you have a low ceiling, you’ll probably want to hang your wall sconce a little below eye level, as keeping them at eye level can lead them to being too close to your ceiling lights (unless they are recessed lights which are flush to the ceiling).
